Landis+Gyr prepaid electricity meter undocumented features

So, due to Joburg's billing crisis, City Power decided that my meter was faulty (really? do you think that a faulty meter is the reason for not getting revenue from me when Joburg is not sending out bills?) and offered to convert me to a prepaid meter free of charge.  I could accept the conversion, or be disconnected, so the choice was simple, really.
Since there are no wind-up computers available (yet), and I am typing this, I guess the choice I made is obvious.
Anyway, my Landys+Gyr Cashpower 3-phase PLC (Power line communication) meter came with a one-pager as an excuse for a manual, and enticingly alluded to "Information functions", and listed just 4 (000, 001, 009 and 014).  Being curious, I played around and discovered several more, which I document below for the interested.  To access them, press the "i" button, and enter the required three digit code.  It is not necessary to press "i" again before entering more codes to view other functions. So, here goes:

  1. I have a prepaid Landis Gyr meter too. Since installation, our usage has more than doubled. Despite several complaints to City Power, we just see our units disappearing like crazy. I actually hate this meter. Our rand cost is horrendous and no amount of trying to save electricity makes any dents in the usage.

  2. Switch off the main switch, and check the instantaneous consumption with 001 - if it is not 0, you might actually have the wrong meter and pay for your neighbour's consumption.

  3. On the 23 May 2013, we moved to complex in Weavind Park, a suburb in Pretoria. On the 23 May 2013 we purchased electricity for R 750- 00 and on the 27 May 2013 we purchased another 346,4kwh for R500 - 00. Today our reading stands at 471.4kwh. We find this extremely low. We are conserving electricity, namely switch off geyser, put lights on when necessary, do not use drier, TV at night only, etc. We are highly concerned about the high cost of electricity.

    1. Try the following. Check the power units from your meter first, and unplug all connection from the wall plugs,wait an hour to check what happened to your left power units.... Make sure to collect the power unit digits properly at first before unplugged...
      If nothing happening or no changes are made in-terms of units decrease on meter leadings know that your meter is perfect then employ this style habit all the time during the time when electricity is unnecessary in use or complied to times you on travelling.

    3. Hi if you display shows a sad face and open circuit then the meter thinks it is in tamper mode.need to get your supplier to give you a tamper token. they may want to check the outside meter to see if it has been tampered with first before giving you a tamper token.

    4. @MisterX@Louis.. you have to update your meter key, try and see if you notice the difference in your SGC number (5/6 digit number) between your old electricity token slip and your latest one (the one that won't load). Do to so you'll have to visit the place where you buy your electricity and ask then to update your your meter key. Hope this helps

  5. Hi, we have a Cashpower LandisGyr+ class 2. And yesterday we ran out of units. I cannot load more units because the screen keeps resetting itself and the red light keeps flashing. You put in 4 numbers and it flashes and clears the screen... I don't know what to do or why it's doing this?!? Do you maybe know why??? Please help!!!

    4. The meter cannot handle all of the appliances, etc connected to your plug points. Sadly, you have to unplug as many things as you can and switch the plugs off. Then wait 10 minutes. Then switch the meter back on again. If the 30 has gone then the meter will accept your electricity token

  26. The -----30---- simply means the system is offline and you will not be able to load new vouchers. When the -----30------ display goes away and you can see what your meter reading is then only can you load a new voucher. It seems as the system is more offline then online.

  31. Error .......30....... please switch off all plugs from the main switch and plug ur meter box from the kitchen and go back to the main switch just make on plug for the kitchen just follow up the step....
    Press "I" its gonna shows lots of lines just press "000"
    And wait its gonna show ur meter number then after that its gonna show your units ....after just put ur voucher pin I hope its gonna helps goodluck

  44. Please help. I have the Landis Gyr+ pre paid meter. A City power technician entered a RESET CODE and my meter and electricity supply was fixed.
    During a storm last night the meter went off as did the electricity supply. The meter now shows a :( unhappy face. I've tried yesterday's reset code but it obviously only works once
    All I need is a new reset code. I've logged a fault online and can't get through to the call centre.
    Is there an easy way to resolve this?

  47. For all the Error code 30 people. I had the same issue. I found that my DSTV Explora decoder was interfering with the meter. So switch off and unplug all electronic devices, then try enter the voucher code. Good luck.

Hi All I need to share this ...I experienced the error 30 code last year March, we were new to prepaid meters and the box was completely dead I started googling solutions while my husband walked to a neighbour to try and charge the unit, thats when I came across this blog and when we tried the "switch off the mains press i 000" solution it worked 100% I even posted after to thank the person for the solution HOWEVER this evening we experienced once again (ironically March 2018) the same problem "error 30" it being a year later I was desperately trying to locate this blog with the "solution" needless to say we have been trying for more than an hour every solution posted here but to no avail (my husband was "maning" the main switches while I was positioned with the unit at a kitchen plug pressing the i's and 000 / 456) we tried 000 we tried 456 we plugged out all the plugs .. made sure that the rooter was off ...put all the phones on flight mode (something was interfering with the connection we needed to be sure) eventually after moving into 2 hours of frustration and struggle we were about to call it a night and sleep in the dark.. when I walked over to the main switch box, looked up and realised that the main switch was off!!! My husband in his frustration with the situation was flipping the wrong switch! So once again thank you for the solution it does work, this time it was human error, please make sure that your partner is switching the right switches ...Good evening to all..

I have gone through comments and tried all to naught, then I arrived at your post and being a woman without a Mr in the house, I've done all as suggest in the comments above. Yours was the light bulb moment. Went to the DB box and noticed that all was down including the main switch, switched it on then punched the 456 and voucher number and at first nothing happened then boom 0.0 appeared in the pin pad window. I was so happy that I almost stepped over my dog who was sensing my frustration and almost spilled my glass of red wine that I just poured to calm me down. The electricity has been off since 830 and i only managed to get it right at 17.30 on a Sunday nogal... The 30th December 2018. Thank you to everyone in this forum, this is the highlight of my life and I shall not take it for granted.

    Switched off the mains... plug the device in by the kitchen (must do this!) switched the mains ON as well as the "plugs" go to box in the kitchen pressed i waited then 000 and then entered the voucher number and the electricity went on again. Hope this helps

  56. After struggling the entire morning with error 30, I finally completely unplugged DSTV, play station , rooter, microwave n put cellphones on airplane mode, BUT left the prepaid plugged in. Than switched off and on mains. Pressed the i till beeps. Pressed 000 waited for meter no to appear than units than I entered the voucher code while praying.
    Something I did was right because it finally loaded.

    -Disconnect every plug in the house.
    -Leave the PerPaid meter on the plug on.
    -Wait 10/15mins
    -Put in 456 00000000000 i
    -Wait 10mins
    **You may need to do this 5 to 8 times...but it Will work.**
    -Then put in the Token Code.

      So after I hot my power restored. I figured out which DB switch is connect to the PrePaided meter. I now just keep that one up and the rest down and it works well.

    I recently had the problem with an Error 30 popping up when trying to load my token/ voucher. I tried for over an hour without luck. Eventually I switched off all my lights and plug points, and switched off lights, geyser and plug points on the DB Board as well (except for the kitchen plug where my meter is plugged in). In darkness, and with the use of my phone torch, I tried the token again and it finally worked. Hope this helps.

    1. Check for open circuit on screen. Reset breakers on main board. Oepn circuit change batteries an retype in nee units. Meter has not updated to show zero units as yet.

  119. My meter is dead, I switched it on, load a voucher it shows its loading with a smiley face but then switches off.
    I have tried loading the voucher at my neighbours place and still the same thing.
    When I do restart the device it comes up with error 31
    The call centre told me I need to get a new battery .
    Will that solve my issue and if so where can I get a battery from.

    1. Communication error. Switch off main supply switch off plaugs sockets. Switch on mains switch on one socket at a time and load. Interference due to irregluar pulse measured in hertz. Remove any interference ie DST charging block evem solar.
